Boardwalk Porsche has a few questions for you. How much would you offer for a classic 1979 Porsche 911 Turbo? What if the model had previously been owned by billionaire Bill Gates? Well, one dedicated Porsche enthusiast from Germany bought one such auto for $80K.
Impressed? We at Boardwalk Porsche sure are. Before this famous Porsche model was auctioned off, Vienna-based Dorotheum Auction House's staff set an estimate for how much they thought the 1979 auto would go for. As it turns out, they were way off. Auctioneers originally pinned this Porsche 911 Turbo to go for around $62K.
Now, just because these auto enthusiasts aimed low, that doesn't mean they are blind to the model's prestige. In fact, one Dorotheum staff member acknowledges that "there was enormous interest in this item from all over the world."1
On top of gaining popularity for previously carrying around the famous Bill Gates, the 1979 Porsche auto is also venerated for its highly original underpinnings. What's more, the model earned a spot on the top 5 "Car of the Century Competition" list back in 1999. Now, how's that for special? Pretty incredible, we think.
